Mom Is Always Right

The Bible features numerous mothers who played significant roles in biblical history. Notable mothers include Eve, Sarah, Hannah, Jochebed, Elizabeth, and Mary. Mary is, without a doubt, the most well-known mother in the Bible. She was chosen to be Jesus’ mother—the most important maternal role in human history. Like Mary, every mother is valued by God and entrusted with raising children in the Word. The Bible views mothers as a gift from God and highlights their role in shaping future generations.

We have some high standards set by these biblical mothers. A mother’s goal is to be Christ-like. However, living in a sinful, fallen world, we are all sinners. I can’t tell you how many mothers I know who criticize themselves for decisions they felt weren’t right while raising their children. Often, kids might say in the moment how cruel their mother’s boundaries are, only to realize later—Mom was right.

My daughter, age eleven, has a saying: “Mom is always right.” Numerous times, I’ll tell her not to do something because the result won’t be ideal. However, as a preteen, she tests things for herself—and most of the time, she discovers my prediction was correct.

Most recently, while I was in the shower, she and my son decided to make a simple dessert called Dalgona. It required melting sugar in a hot pan and adding baking soda. I had told her earlier I would help because she’d make a mess without me. Long story short, I came out of the shower to a smoke-filled house. I quickly grabbed the pan, which was on fire, and rushed it outside as she apologized profusely, admitting I was right.

Lately, she’s been taking my advice and avoiding messy situations. She knows I make my share of mistakes, but she also knows I have her best interests at heart. That’s not to say I’m always right—because I’m not—but I’m hopeful my children trust my discernment, and for that, I’m grateful.

Proverbs 31:26–29 describes the valuable role a mother plays in the lives of her family:
“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”
And she always makes sure her kids don’t burn the house down while making dessert.

A mother would lay down her life for her children. A mother prays for her children. A mother reads the Bible to her children. A mother loves her children unconditionally. And, most of the time, a mother is always right.
