"He's God" by Les and Joyce Carlsen: Story Behind the Song

"He's God" was born out of awe.

Craig Church had just sent me a piece of music and I was thinking about lyrics and melody. I didn’t start out to write a big rock anthem. I was just sitting with Scripture, overwhelmed by how massive, powerful, and personal God really is. The Bible says the clouds are the dust of His feet—and that image wrecked me. If God is that big, why would our praise be small? I love watching football, and I’m from Seattle so guess who I like. Cheering for a team is great but cheering for God would be even better. If we can erupt like that for a game, imagine the sound of millions of voices, young and old, from every tribe and nation, cheering together as we praise the living God.

Scripture tells us that God inhabits the praises of His people. He lives in it. He delights in it. Creation is already shouting His glory—rocks, trees, skies—so why should we be silent? This idea came alive for me—the joy, the awe, the sheer bigness of God, and a holy frustration that we’ll scream our lungs out for a football team but sometimes whisper about the Creator of the universe. Praise isn’t polite applause—it’s a celebration. It’s stadium-level, Psalm-150, crash-the-cymbals, shout-it-from-your-chest praise.

This song is a call to stop shrinking back, stop being subtle, and proclaim loudly what we believe:

He’s not just good. He’s not just worthy.
He’s God!
Rah! Rah! Hallelujah! He’s God!!
